The driver at its AGENTS.md and header-comment revision (9bfaa98): no
code change since 0.1.14; the pinned source now matches the head of the
repository for the release.
Grbl protocol: the welcome banner on every connect, a one-second TX
stall bound, a 2 KiB TX ring (grblHAL-glowforge e507e13). Bench-proven
on the bench reference: a LightBurn connect shows the banner and the
machine settings read completes without a disconnect.
Stream and motion robustness: the shipper writes outside the lock, a
clamp inside an armed window faults, the X/Y soft limits follow the
home, the machine's settings are pinned, the homing keys are clamped
(grblHAL-glowforge 511ff25). Bench-proven with motion.soft-limits and
motion.deadman on the bench reference.
The emission gates: the per-tick fire gate, the latch with an owner,
the cooling verdict's two tiers, and the arm-flow gates
(grblHAL-glowforge 16d2b9e). Bench-proven with laser.verdict-cut and
laser.armed-kill on the bench reference.
grblHAL-glowforge 0.1.11 (1f2ea9c): a controller taking the pulse device
clears a dead session's cnc/streaming flag, the way it already acks that
session's stale underrun. laser.armed-kill kills the controller mid-fire,
and the machine came back with the kernel still believing the killed
session was feeding it.
ForgeFIRM's own files live under /data/forgefirm; two configuration
files did not. The machine settings sat at /data/forgefirm.conf, in the
root of /data beside the factory's own files, and the cloud-mode
configuration sat at /data/etc/gfhome.conf, inside a directory the
factory owns. Both move:
/data/forgefirm.conf -> /data/forgefirm/forgefirm.conf
/data/etc/gfhome.conf -> /data/forgefirm/gfhome.conf
There is no migration: only the bench has ever run this firmware.
/data/etc now holds only the factory's wpa_supplicant.conf.
The acceptance check of the file modes reads the settings file at its
new path, and the two bench tools that read it directly follow. The
pins move to the revisions that carry the change, forgectrl also
bringing the fix that reads the module's disabled state as idle:
forgectrl 468ee21 (0.1.12)
grblhal-glowforge 9ee624b (0.1.10)
forgefirm-app 56f134a (0.1.28+git)
The lock moves meta-openglow to b7ad6d9, which pins python3-gfhardware
on the same revision. The four upstream layers stay where they were:
`kas lock --update` moves every floating repository, and a release is
not the place to take poky, meta-openembedded and meta-freescale along
for the ride.
forgectrl 93fb22e fits the lens outcome text in the buffer the supervisor
shares with the probe. grblHAL-glowforge 97be92b takes the lens reference
from the realtime hook rather than settings-changed, so the controller no
longer overwrites the Z it just referenced.
Both verified with bitbake -c fetch at these revisions.
forgectrl dd40dc8 takes the lens onto its hall edge in the motion-verify
window and gates the spawn when it cannot, and carries the per-axis
anchor, homed_axes on /status, and the panel reading Z from its own bit.
grblHAL-glowforge ef0f764 takes that reference as it loads its settings,
re-zeroes the kernel counters the daemon's GPIO steps never reached, and
drops M103.
Both verified with bitbake -c fetch at these revisions.
The three components carry documentation-only commits: the README
becomes an index card, AGENTS.md lands, and the comments that pointed at
the retired BRINGUP.md now point at the documentation site.
The pins move because the tree is already past the image that
20260907224817 built: a comment in the kernel config fragment
glowforge.cfg changed the meta-glowforge-bsp layer content hash, which
the manifest counts as a platform change. Measured against that image's
manifest: meta-forgefirm and meta-openglow-core are unchanged,
meta-glowforge-bsp is not. A fresh image build and a full acceptance
campaign therefore precede any release, and holding these pins back
would buy nothing.
Verified: every pinned revision is on its public remote, and
bitbake -c fetch resolves all of them.
grblhal-glowforge e2ba043 carries the core fork at 362577d, whose block
ring index covers $398 up to 1000. Fetch-verified with bitbake -c fetch.
Pin bump only.
forgectrl 0.1.6 (b1eee4d): the xy_microsteps setting and the quiet hold route.
grblhal-glowforge 0.1.5 (48d5f1d): the XY scale, tick and stop ramp derived
from the microstep mode, plus the producer lead ceiling.
forgefirm-app 0.1.25+git (d1c47b8): the checked header keys note; the
python3-gfhardware pin in meta-glowforge-bsp moves with it.
Fetch-verified with bitbake -c fetch. Pin bump only: the acceptance
consequence is the catalog invalidation the manifest already derives.
forgectrl carries the GRBL settings store into the data directory, which
the acceptance suite already asserts. grblhal-glowforge follows the core
off the deprecated settings-changed event and moves the core submodule to
the fork rebased onto build 20260905.
Both revisions fetch.
meta-forgefirm: the forgefirm-users init replays the account at boot;
sshd refuses root and empty passwords and runs only while the panel
turns it on; the release image keeps an empty root password for the
console; the console banner; avahi announces forgefirm.local; https in
libmicrohttpd and ulfius; the panel on 80 and 443; the license bundle on
the rootfs; release.sh checks the root policy on the built rootfs.
forgetest: the commission suites (commission, commission_dark,
commission_sheet: 23 cases); the runner turns cloud mode on with the
typed phrase for a test that declares it; the baseline's motor_lock is
0; the log-export test checks the bundle for the camera key; the record
helpers write bytes as given and join the daemon's paths as POSIX. The
stream harness gains rule 24: a hold verdict is held again after a
resume. Bench drills: lens_travel.py and lens_stop_accel.py.
Docs: BRINGUP carries the present state; CAMPAIGN-LOG carries the dated
record.
forgectrl 8ef9509 at 0.1.2, grblhal-glowforge 2f5edee at 0.1.2, and the
forgefirm-app recipes at dd0ebf3, 0.1.23+git. These are the sources the
full campaign on image 20260903211413 passed against, now that their
repositories are pushed and the build no longer needs the local overlay.
The audit remediation's commits and the bench session's fixes in the
three repositories, pushed and bench-proven on image 20260902144848
(built from the same commits through a local pin overlay). Each PV
moves with its SRCREV; the manifest records the PV.
BRINGUP describes the present: the 54-test catalog and its seven-test
always core, the tier counts, the shipped low-temperature gates, the
density floor ($35 = 10), the two local core commits, the ffboot env
write, the aa-offset route, the current bench image, and the bench
measurements the audit asks for (pooled into the next session). The
workstation shell notes and every em dash are gone.
forgetest: the takeover waits for the cloud client too (found by its
command line); the unauthenticated /boot probe names the endpoint's
parameter; the UI prose is American English. Recipes: forgetest
fetches its package directory and init script only and drops
__pycache__ at unpack; the dev image no longer re-adds forgectrl; the
release image's remove list drops the gfui-client the BSP no longer
has; the platform identity strips the kernel's local-version hash
from the modules directory name, so a re-patched kernel keeps its
fingerprints. grblhal restart is stop then start. release.sh --dev
packs the dev image. fixture.sh refuses a readable env file.
Bench tools: the live-fire drills measure the lid-IR baseline before
every run and point at the fire-watch thresholds the engine reads;
one thermistor conversion (gfbench.degc) serves every drill; the six
dated measurement records leave the tool directory; feeder.c names the
two sysfs writes its caller makes.
Host tests: forgetest 258 pass; the coverage lint reports no uncovered
path across 54 tests. Acceptance: forgectrl.auth covers the /boot
probe; update.* cover ffboot and the manifest identity; the runbook
and bench-tool changes have no catalog consequence.
The recipe URLs, the release and install URLs, the vendor check and the CI checkouts name openglow-org, and the grblHAL core fork is openglow-org/grblHAL-core. No catalog change is owed: the recipe edits move the meta-forgefirm content hash, which every test fingerprint folds in through the platform block, so the whole catalog re-runs on its own.
The release rootfs carried python3-modules (tkinter, idle, 2to3, pydoc,
ensurepip, venv, asyncio, multiprocessing, xmlrpc) through the python3
meta-package, and libgnutls30, nettle, libgmp10, libunistring5 and
libtasn1 through libmicrohttpd (https) and ulfius (GnuTLS). Nothing on
the image uses either. Each Python recipe declares the module packages it
imports; forgetest declares its own, so the dev image carries no module
the release image lacks.
Pins: forgectrl 0e907f7db54b7a4c90b660f198d49e5c66b667b5 (armed shown from a
fresh report only, zero smoke phase for a dark session), grblhal-glowforge
fa9ed7834faab6f48367dc1ca5a5109b474f788d (rail enable only standalone).
BRINGUP: the lid IR lamp response measured over the full range; no camera
register file under /data; the rail policy and the cool status items
closed; laser.armed-kill stays in its domain; the debug-kernel drill
constraints.
Platform change (layer content): the full campaign is owed on the built
image.
The M101 dose-model switch with its derived per-model floors, and the
controller's published state files with their /status echo and panel
card. Both proven host-side and, for the switch, on the bench (the
mswitch drill); the catalog covers the changes through the model-aware
laser.power-floor, laser.power-model-switch and the extended
forgectrl.panel-serves.
grblHAL-glowforge a7dcdca: the arm at the first laser-on is decided by the
window alone, and an RX overrun drops the overrunning line whole and stops
the job. forgectrl 2f18b16: the flow check's baseline and end are means,
and the tube's share of the rise is taken off before the limit. Both
verified with bitbake -c fetch.
The rapids after an M5 ship dark, and a job whose M3 runs at the level
the previous job ended at fires its first cut. Fetch-verified.
Catalog consequence: laser.m5-rapid-dark and the laser live tests cover
the driver; the pin lives in the pin file, so only those tests re-run.
grblHAL-glowforge 03d70e0, pinned here, makes density the shipped model
and $35 the density floor at 10. Every analog session in the stream
harness now selects its model rather than inheriting it: without that the
flip would have quietly turned them into density runs and taken the
analog fallback's coverage with them. laser.power-floor carries the new
floor and its PWMSAR minimum, and its description no longer describes
$35 as a duty floor.
All ten stream sessions pass on the new defaults, with the analog duties
shifting exactly as the floor predicts - min_value 12, gradient 0.115 -
along with both C harnesses and the lifecycle harness.
Recorded in BRINGUP and the campaign log, including what the defaults
rest on and what they do not: the seven ladders ran at F300 and F100 at
constant power, so production feeds, M4 into corners and the raster path
remain unproven on hardware.
Rule 15 in the stream harness holds both halves of the minimum
(grblHAL-glowforge f7e8c17, pinned here): no emitted burst falls below
laser_pulse_min_ticks, excepting one clipped by fire going off mid-burst,
and the levels too faint to fill a window still render their exact
average density. Checked against a run at minimum 1 so it cannot pass
vacuously - level 2 goes from 444 bursts of one tick to 147 of three at
the same density, and levels already above the minimum are unchanged.
Four bench ladders settle the base period at 20. The same six rungs
marked in all of them, and the matched pairs across periods separate the
variables: at identical pulse length, halving the density killed the
mark; at identical density, varying the pulse 3x changed nothing. Feed
does not move it either - 10 percent at F100 carries 44 percent more
energy per mm than 20 percent at F300, which marks, and still left
nothing. The low-end marking limit is average power, not dose per length
and not pulse length.
The F100 trace separates two failures that look alike on the material:
seven current segments for eight rungs, anchored by a flat saturated
final segment that can only be full density, put 5 percent at no
discharge at all and 10 percent at a full 15 seconds of current with no
mark. Only the first is ours, and the minimum pulse is the answer to it.
Also recorded: the factory's Precision Power 1 runs a 19.53 percent FIRE
duty cycle at full PWM duty, and its 1-100 scale maps onto density
18.9-79.5 percent, so its 1 percent is the bottom of the useful band
rather than 1 percent of the range. Under the density model $35 and $36
are that same control - a density floor and ceiling - which makes the
user-facing scale a settings choice rather than new code.
Four new sessions in the stream harness cover the model (grblHAL-glowforge
2bca017, pinned here). Density renders the commanded level exactly -
levels 2, 3, 7, 15, 25 and 38 came back as 0.0158, 0.0237, 0.0551,
0.1182, 0.1969 and 0.2993 against level/127 of 0.01575, 0.02362, 0.05512,
0.11811, 0.19685 and 0.29921 - S1000 renders 1.0000 and still ends dark,
every power byte carries full duty, and a level change inside a run costs
no stream byte where analog ships one per level.
Rule 13 is the one worth having: the same job run under both models
produces an identical motion grid tick for tick, and all 20051 density
FIRE ticks fall inside the 169776 the analog run fired. The model masks
the core's fire state and never sources one, measured rather than argued.
Rule 14 covers the idle-gap fix: a standalone S between moves, from a
sender slow enough to drain the planner, now fires each move at its own
level (28338 ticks each at duties 30, 52 and 84). Before the fix duty 30
held all 85014 and the other two levels never appeared. That closes
"Next work" item 18, which this work opened earlier today.
The harness now derives its expectations from the board's floor and
chains two launches over one settings file, because the core precomputes
the S to duty mapping once when the spindle is enabled: $35 written at
runtime persists and reports immediately but only enters force at the
next controller start. That is recorded in BRINGUP beside the existing
defaults note, and laser.power-floor's failure message now says so.
Acceptance: the density path shipping off by default is inert until
laser_power_model is set, and the laser tests' covers already name
grblhal-glowforge src/**; the model's own acceptance test waits on the
bench drill that picks the base period.
The pthresh ladder on scrap puts the tube's two thresholds far apart: the
discharge strikes between 2 and 3 percent duty, but nothing lases usefully
below 16 percent (PWMSAR 20), and the rungs between show only a spot at
each line start. $35 ships at 16 (grblhal-glowforge 9466f76, pinned here).
The drill said current lift-off and first mark share a rung; this run
falsifies that, so its docstring and read-the-material text now name both
thresholds and warn that a start-of-line spot is below the threshold, not
at it.
A start-of-line spot is also what a full-power leak at a kernel run start
would look like, so laser_stream_test gains a ladder session (rule 10):
every FIRE tick must ride a commanded duty, and the fire ticks must divide
evenly across rungs. Both hold exactly - six commanded duties, no others,
and 28296 fire ticks on every rung - so the spots are the tube, not the
stream. The harness now derives its expectations from the floor, which
moves the M4 session's S500 plateau from 63 to 73.
laser.power-floor is a new auto acceptance test, the suite's only
non-firing one: a machine must actually carry the commissioned floor,
since stored settings beat freshly baked defaults.
Three cloud cuts of one square at Precision Power 1, 100 and Full Power
show what the analog path is competing with: the power byte is pinned at
127 in all three, dose is FIRE-bit density on a fixed 7-tick period with
the on-count dithered between adjacent integers, and the power setting
never reaches the machine at all. Facts bank and item 17 carry the
numbers; CAMPAIGN-LOG carries both sessions.
Bump the grblHAL pin to the producer lead and margin instrumentation.
Rewrite BRINGUP item 16 to the present state. The scheduling half is
done - the producer runs SCHED_FIFO below the shipper, core_mx carries
priority inheritance, and clamping is reported per run - and two bench
runs 90 s apart on one image show what that does and does not cover: a
nice-5 CPU hog passes clean while the camera streaming clamps 7 runs,
because per-frame cache maintenance over a 4.8 MB non-coherent capture
buffer is kernel-context work no userspace priority can preempt.
Record the margin finding, since it explains why a 4 ms stall was
enough: the queue depth cancels between the shipper's due index and the
producer's base, so the pacing lead is the only slack. Record the
cycle-churn ceiling that caps that lead at 10 ms, and that the re-base
fix is what unlocks more.
Camera gating stays owed, with capture resolution named as the lever
that shortens the stall rather than merely spacing stalls out.
Bump the grblHAL pin to the real-time producer change.
Add motion.step-timing-under-load: the catalog had nothing that
exercised step generation while userspace competed for the single core,
which is exactly the gap that let the condition go unnoticed - the ring
never runs dry, so cnc/underruns reads 0 through it. The test asserts
the producer and the shipper both hold SCHED_FIFO, then drives
2000 mm/min round trips against a deliberate nice-5 CPU hog and requires
the controller to report no clamped events.
Add the pthresh live-fire drill: a constant-power ladder from 2 % to
30 % of full on scrap. Because $35 is a percent of full duty and the
rungs are percents of $30 with $31 = 0, the lowest rung that marks reads
directly as the $35 value. It needs $35 = 0 for the run, or the floor
lifts every rung and hides the threshold.
Record both open items in BRINGUP. The laser one carries the finding
that the factory never uses duty as a power control - all five firing
jobs in the captured pulse files pin the power byte at 127 and modulate
dose by dithering the FIRE bit at 6.5-18.8 % density - so the captures
cannot supply a $35 default, and the duty to optical-power transfer
function of this supply has never been measured.
The lid/button/interlock parity change (BRINGUP item 16): the arm wait
and a running job cancel on lid or interlock the factory's way, the
button pauses/resumes, lid_policy and the cloud pause tick settings.
Cloud tests cloud.* and the new motion/laser lid tests cover the
components; the python3-gfhardware / gfutilities pins move with this in
meta-openglow.
A component pin bump counted as a platform change: the layer content hash
in the platform identity covered the recipe carrying the SRCREV, the
platform is folded into every acceptance fingerprint, so every image
that carried any component update invalidated the whole catalog (dev
image 20260816191951: every test domain-changed after a one-line
forgectrl bump; the two manifests differ only in
platform.layers.meta-forgefirm). The component entry already identifies
the pinned source file by file; the pin double-counted it.
Component pins now live in <recipe>-pin.inc (SRCREV and the PV that
moves with it, nothing else) - forgectrl, grblhal-glowforge and
forgefirm-app here, the BSP components in meta-openglow - and
forgefirm-image-manifest.bbclass leaves *-pin.inc out of the layer
content (FORGEFIRM_MANIFEST_PIN_SUFFIX). Recipe bodies, patches, config
fragments, init scripts and third-party pins with no manifest entry stay
layer content; a pin written into a recipe body still hashes (the safe
direction). manifest-from-tree.py mirrors the rule and reads pins
through the recipe's requires; test_tree_manifest.py proves both
(pin bump: hash unchanged; recipe body or inline pin: changed).
Bitbake resolves the same SRCREV/PV for every pinned recipe.
Docs: ACCEPTANCE.md (what layer content is), kas/README.md (the pin
files in the push order), BRINGUP.md (the finding and the bench
consequence: the first image built with the pin files is itself a
platform change, so its campaign is a full one; pin bumps inherit
after it).
No catalog consequence: nothing in the image's behavior changes; the
change is to the acceptance identity computation, proven by the unit
tests and the CI lint on the tree manifest.
Every image records the identity of its build inputs. forgefirm-manifest.bbclass
gives a component recipe a per-file source fingerprint (git ls-tree blob ids,
submodules recursed; file:// sources hashed with git hash-object); the kernel
and glowforge.ko publish theirs through do_deploy because kernel-module-split
leaves the module recipe's main package empty. forgefirm-image-manifest.bbclass
assembles the entries with the platform identity - machine, modules directory,
device tree hashes, layer content hashes (meta-forgefirm and the meta-openglow
layers by content, the kas-managed layers by revision) - into
/etc/forgefirm-manifest.json and deploys a copy next to the image. Layer
revisions and dirty flags stay outside the identity, so a rebuild from an
unchanged tree keeps its content hash and the release and dev images of one
build share it. The acceptance tool and the release gate read this file.
rsyslog replaces busybox syslogd/klogd (VIRTUAL-RUNTIME_base-utils-syslog,
trimmed PACKAGECONFIG) and becomes the only log writer: the appended
/etc/rsyslog.conf sets the inputs and the ff_line format and includes
the per-logger rules that `forgectrl --render-syslog` renders from the
machine settings at boot. forgefirm-logrotate becomes forgefirm-logging:
render before rsyslog starts (S19), sweep the pre-syslog log files into
/data/forgefirm/legacy-logs once, and rotate the tree at boot and hourly
by rename + HUP instead of copytruncate. Pins bumped to the pushed
forgectrl (syslog emitter, Logs tab, export), grblHAL-glowforge (syslog
emitter) and python3-gfhardware apps (syslog handlers, capture dir);
the CI harnesses set FFLOG_STDERR=1 so failure diagnostics keep the
controller's log lines. BRINGUP carries the bench validation checklist
(Next work item 14); this is an image change and rides the next flash.
SAFETY.md and the safing figure name GPIO4_06 for what it is - the
readback of the chain's HV_ENABLE output through U24 (the factory net
label E-STOP is kept as a note); BRINGUP records the rename, the
device-tree polarity flip that makes bit 4 read as HV_ENABLE itself,
the removal of the estop_halts_motion opt-in, and the bench check for
the flash that ships it. Recipe pins move to forgectrl 801f1f3,
grblHAL-glowforge b629c18 and python3-gfhardware c3d1790 (PV 0.1.5).
forgectrl ed2934b, grblHAL da4c8eb, forgefirm-app (gfhardware) 6c7534a -
all pushed and fetch-verified, license population checked for the
multi-license recipes.
Pulls in the coarse-pacing fix for parked wait-for-operator states (a
machine left in Door or Hold no longer pins ~28% of the core), plus
P10's grblHAL CI/tests and the mlockall-root-only change. Fetch-verified.
Adds pacing_test.py (dry hold/resume + CPU measurement) and records the
diagnosis and bench validation in BRINGUP.
forgectrl aa99d30, grblHAL-glowforge e74f53f, and the forgefirm-app
sources at python3-gfhardware c9d602a (PV 0.1.3) - the Phase 1-9
remediation work, pushed and pinned.
- Controllers stop at K80, before forgectrl at K90: runlevel 0/6 no
longer tears down the cooling engine, fire gates, and broker while a
controller may still be executing a job.
- The grblhal/gfcloud init scripts are real emergency levers: stop
routes through the supervisor (POST /controller/stop - a bare pkill
was safed and respawned seconds later), start resumes supervision,
status exists, and the pkill fallback matches full executable paths
instead of truncated names or bare substrings.
- slotmigrate: the partition grow gets the same 2048-sector tolerance
as the filesystem branch (an exact compare rewrote the MBR at S02 on
every boot on disks where the grow cannot land on the last sector),
verifies it made progress, and the resize2fs retry is bounded at
three attempts with the counter kept on p3 itself.
- Installer: archive product/platform are verified after the signature,
and a validly signed OLDER release now requires an explicit yes
instead of installing as a silent downgrade. All predictable /tmp
paths in the installer and ffboot are mktemp now.
- release.sh rejects multiple positional versions (the last one used to
win silently) and a release without factory-era verification dies
unless explicitly bypassed; mkfw.sh refuses to pack when the public
key for the post-sign self-check is missing.
- forgefirm-logrotate: size-capped rotation (boot + hourly) for the
/data logs - a full /data breaks settings, update staging, and the
controllers own writes.
- Bench build scripts derive every path from their own location or
FF_SRC_TOP/FF_BUILD_TOP and log to mktemp files.
The controller now maps the door pair and the interlock loop onto the core's
safety-door signal, with the e-stop bit behind a machine setting. Records what
is gated and what is deliberately not, the answer to the audit's latch-reset
question, and the bench items the change still needs.
